For some it fills them with dread... cold sweats and sleepless nights. For others it’s their moment to shine and show off weeks of dance classes that have paid off... what am I talking about? The first dance. The moment where all eyes are on you both and you’re praying you wont trip up, mess up or have a power cut (I unfortunately had the latter during mine!).
The thing that tends to have couples stumped is what on earth are they going to pick for their song? Ive had many beautiful requests and some are listed below. I've also had a few where i’ve had to ask the couple to look at the lyrics and consider their choice again. A song may sound lovely but you definitely don’t want to dance your way into married life with lyrics about breaking up!
For some its an easy choice, for others its hours spent searching for the perfect one. Hopefully the advice and ideas in this blog will give you some inspiration and if you have a suggestion not listed below please add it to the comments!
The ‘significant moment’ songs
I’ve heard so many wonderful background stories as to why couples picked their song. My favourite first dances are the ones that represent a moment in the couples relationship. These are some sweet, real life stories behind the reason for a first dance song...
The song that appeared on every mix CD one partner made the other
The song they first danced to
The song that was played all the time on the radio when they first got together.
The song that was on their engagement skydive video (amazing proposal!)
A song that was the soundtrack to a previous holiday they had taken.
Think about a significant moment in your relationship, is there a song that accompanies it? It doesn’t have to be a song that is years old in your relationship, it could be from a recent event that is important to you. You might need to dig deep but it’s definitely worth it!
Songs for their lyrics
Not everyone has that one song that means something or if they do, it may be appropriate for a first dance. If you don’t, fear not... look for lyrics that say everything you want to in a song. Not feeling a slow & slushy song to dance to? Why not just make it fun? It doesn’t have to be all love songs and romance, if a fun song suits you better as a couple... DO IT!!! Your guests will love it too!

Chicken dance - Yes you heard right! This couple started off with ‘Thinking out loud’ by Ed Sheeran for about 1 minute and then the chicken dance came on. As it was a rule all guests had to dance the chicken dance when it sounded everyone joined in! The bride said it was her favourite memory from the whole day!
All I want for Christmas is you - The perfect Christmas song! This bride sat her hubby on a chair on the dance floor and with some backup dancing from her bridesmaids serenaded him. I was actually involved in this one and it was hilarious!
Acoustic versions
If your song isn’t exactly first dance material, can it be altered into an acoustic version? Some songs have the most beautiful lyrics but you don’t even realise! Check out acoustic covers on Spotify, there are some incredible versions on there by some insanely talented singers! I’ll be uploading some acoustic covers soon so stay tuned!!
